Downsizing: Life in a Camper- Spicy

Downsizing: Life in a Camper- Spicy

     Organization. It’s all about choices.

Do I need 15 different bottles of spices? Do I use that many? Rummaging through the bottles, I didn’t recognize some of them. Several were dried up. Maybe it was time to make my life a little less spicy. Biting my lip, I grabbed the salt, pepper, and cinnamon (face it- everyone needs a little cinnamon once in a while) and abandoned the rest. I somehow felt lighter. Liberated. Proud of myself for letting this small thing go, I tucked the chosen ones into my bag while convicting thoughts stabbed my heart. Do I let things and the pursuit of things smother my life?

Are my things subject to me, or am I a slave to them?

Hmm. I wonder if I’ll feel the same satisfaction next time I need some oregano or nutmeg?

And how about my bulging closet in the tiny camper? Granted, the closet is bigger than most, but it’s still considerably smaller than my previous one. Who knows? I may need those shirts from 1998 again. And when I loose these extra 20 pounds, they will fit once more. If I hang onto them, they may come back into style. That’s saving money, right? I shrug unwilling to face that challenge on this day. I’ll tackle that one next time.

After all, clothes are almost like friends. You may not see them that often, but you are comforted knowing they are there.

Finding myself scrolling through articles promising to teach me how to live more with less, I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s personal to each of us. What I find hard to part with, my daughter would toss in a second. She’s actually helped me cull things more than once on this journey. I have to admit to going behind her and retrieving a couple of things from the trash bin.

Okay, enough heart wrenching decisions for one day. On to the camper to find the perfect spot for my spices. All three of them.

How about you? What ‘treasures’ do you need to examine? Are they treasures, or are they stuff? Comment below with your journey to decluttering. We’ve got this!
